A Look Back at the 2006 & 2007 RMIA Conferences

For a number of years this was the website for the RMIA Annual Conferences, the premier risk conference in the Asia Pacific Region. The conference brings together Risk professionals from across the Asia Pacific Region.
Content is from the site's 2006 -2007 conferences.

If you have inadvertently ended up here while searching for information about RMIA, go to their current site at: www.rmiaconference.com.au/

The practice of Risk Management is changing in response to the rapidly changing global economy, the increased speed of the product lifecycle and the onus on governments to ensure competitive economies. Combined with uncertainty factors such as terrorism, bio-security, complexity of regulation and the increased scrutiny of organisational governance, there are great opportunities and challenges for risk management practitioners.

The RMIA National Conference in 2006 will provide both the insight and the tools to realise the opportunities and minimise the threats to your organisation’s ability to achieve its strategic intent.

Beginning on the Sunday morning, there will be a range of knowledge sessions in a variety of formats to meet the needs of strategic and operational risk managers from the public, private and not for profit sectors. Along with valuable knowledge to be gained there will be unparalleled opportunities to network and have some fun.

RMIA 2006 is a must attend event for risk management practitioners, senior managers, consultants, service providers and others in the field.

RMIA 2007 PROGRAM - EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST

RMIA seeks submissions from those interested in being part of RMIA 2007 – the 4th national RMIA conference. The conference committee will provide a range of learning styles and experiences for delegates.

At the RMIA 2007 conference, innovations in program presentation include facilitated round-table discussions and a mock trial. We plan to increase the level of delegate participation and priority will be given to:

  • Presentations
  • Debates
  • Case studies from practitioners
  • Facilitated panel discussions; and
  • Intensive training sessions (eg, training courses or workshops of up to three hours duration)

The intent is to offer a range of formats that will improve learning for delegates and promote more shared experience across all sectors. Preference will be given to submissions that aim to broaden the delegate experience.

The Risk Management Institution of Australasia Limited’s 4th Annual Conference is to be held in 2007 and is set to educate and inspire all practitioners involved in the management of risk. This year the Asia Pacific’s premier risk management learning event will take place on Queensland’s famous Gold Coast from 25 - 27 November 2007. RMIA 2007 presents a focused channel into the risk management marketplace that is not readily available from any other organisation or event in Australasia. Delegates will be provided with the opportunity to network with key decision makers, expand your product or service knowledge and be exposed to industry leaders through the dynamic business program.

The business program is designed around the theme Risk = Opportunity. A range of international and local speakers will provide delegates with key insights into how the risk management function can deliver the strategic objectives of the organisation. Exciting innovations for the 2007 program include a mock trial and 3 hour workshops by experts in the field on:

  • Integrating Risk Management
  • Risk & Opportunity in the post Kyoto World
  • Insurance and the Law
  • Incident Management
  • An Introduction to Risk Management
  • An Introduction to Self Insurance

Our post-conference workshops will also provide delegates with information on special subjects of interest and unique opportunities to share experiences of best practice. Whether it’s Security Risk Management, Self-Insurance or Enterprise Risk Management, don’t miss out on these innovative and interactive sessions.

The program has been developed from a comprehensive call for papers and a judging panel to determine consistency with the theme and quality of content. I believe that this process has produced one of the most outstanding learning programs for risk management practitioners around the globe.
RMIA Conferences are world renowned for keeping delegates up-to-date on leading edge risk management strategies and techniques. I recommend RMIA 2007 to you as an excellent opportunity to maximise your professional development and to network with other risk professionals from around the world.

I look forward to welcoming you to the Gold Coast Convention Centre in November.

Grant Whitehorn
RMIA President

Presenter:
Mr Marwan Al-Qamzi
Marwan has years of experience leading major economic functions in Dubai, spending most of his professional career time working in senior management positions within Dubai Ports Authority - one of the world’s largest holding companies. He is currently the Managing Director of the Palm-Jebel Ali Project.
Unprecedented in design and construction, the Palm Jebel Ali Project involves the construction of what will be the biggest artificial Island in the world. In the shape of a palm, the island will include six marinas, a water theme park, ‘Sea Village’ and homes built on stilts above the water. It will be 50 percent larger than one of its sister projects, Palm Jumeriah, which - along with its other sister project - required approximately 100 million cubic metres of rock and sand.

In an interview with WJAL, he complained, "In spite of the wondrous elegance of the space, you would not believe where the hang ups were." The topic was maintenance, and especially the janitorial supplies required by the massive complex. "Yes, the problem came down to basic trash bags, or the lack of them, if you can believe it." Within an hour of that broadcast, the project had a new bulk supplier for not only trash bags, but all custodial supplies, including hardware and consumer products, like vacuum cleaners (they needed 10,000) and paper towels. Read the Sept issue of Solange to get the whole story.

Travelling to Australia from Dubai, Marwan will talk about how owners of some of the world’s largest projects control risk while maintaining performance and delivery results.
